Dokar is a modern HR management platform that allows employees to record attendance, access salary information and request cash advances through a mobile application, while enabling administrators to efficiently manage employee data and process requests via the web. This project was a group project and I contributed as a Backend Developer responsible for designing and developing the backend system.

Challenges Faced

Dokar Presentation to Client

Seeing the growth in the number of employees in a company, managing them becomes increasingly difficult, and there are occasional mismatches in employee data, whether in personal information, attendance, or payroll. The DOKAR team identified this issue through its parent company, PT. Muti Jaya Sejahtera, an outsourcing company that handles HR management for various companies.

A small team called DOKAR was formed to address and solve human resource management problems, targeting manufacturing companies with large numbers of employees. The team consisted of a Product Owner, Mobile Developer, Backend Developer, Fullstack Developer, Product Developer, and DevOps. In this team, I served as a Backend Developer, responsible for preparing the Restful API for the mobile application.

In the field, we faced various challenges such as employee device limitations, weak network signals in factory areas, multiple bugs discovered in production as user numbers increased, and other internal struggles. Nevertheless, we responded quickly and decisively to meet the MVP goals and ensure user satisfaction, from team discussions to designing features based on field needs and resolving bugs.

In the end, DOKAR was successfully released during client trials with PT. Muti Jaya Sejahtera, starting with more than 200+ users and continuing to grow to this day.

Contributions and Lessons Learned

Daily Stand Up Meeting

As one of the early development team members of DOKAR up to its MVP stage and user adoption, I gained valuable experiences both as part of a team and as a Backend Developer. The main contributions and lessons learned are as follows:

  • Team Collaboration: Discussed and collaborated with the team regarding features to be developed. As a Backend Developer, I was responsible for preparing all API requirements for the Mobile App and designing the database architecture for each existing and new feature.
  • Code Refactoring & Documentation: Refactored code to make it more maintainable and reusable, optimized the performance of slow logic, and created API contract documentation for every developed feature.
  • Problem Solving in Production: Found solutions for bugs and slow performance issues in production, such as implementing a file upload queue to run in the background for better user interaction, optimizing query logic for database management, and applying hotfixes for critical features like the clock-in functionality.
  • Knowledge Sharing & Feedback: Provided input when the team encountered challenges in their roles and welcomed feedback during discussions about system logic, backend processes, and API requirements.

Backend Technologies Used

  • Programming Language: TypeScript, Node.js
  • Framework: NestJS
  • Other Technologies: Zod, R2 Bucket, Redis
  • Database & ORM: PostgreSQL, Prisma
